Amazon Prime Day has arrived, and experts are cautioning consumers to be on the lookout for scams.
Fraudulent activities such as fake emails from individuals pretending to be online retailers like Amazon are not a new occurrence.
However, phishing attempts tend to increase during major sales events such as Black Friday or Prime Day, according to the Better Business Bureau.
Vice president of communications and public relations at the Better Business Bureau, Josh Planos, noted that these events present a significant opportunity for scammers, con artists, or unethical businesses to take advantage of consumers and swindle them out of their money.
Prime Day, a two-day discount event for Amazon prime members, begins on Tuesday and continues through Wednesday.
The Better Business Bureau recently updated its guidance, advising consumers to be cautious of counterfeit websites, overly enticing social media advertisements, and unsolicited emails or calls during sales events this month.
Consumers may need to exercise greater vigilance this year. In June, the Better Business Bureau reported receiving a record number of phishing reports in 2023.
The organization also stated that reports have been on the rise so far this year.
