The Federal Government has urged Nigerians traveling abroad to register with Nigerian embassies and consulates in their respective countries to facilitate prompt assistance during emergencies.
This request was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed, during a discussion with the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria, chaired by Idehai Frederick, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to DICAN, Amb. Ahmed emphasized the necessity of notifying Nigerian missions upon arrival in foreign nations, instead of waiting for issues to arise.
“I encourage Nigerians to make it a priority to inform the Nigerian mission in the country they are visiting.
This straightforward action can help avert misunderstandings and ensure Nigerians get the support they require in times of need.
Recently, there was an incident involving Nigerians stranded in the Central African Republic, where some attempted to tarnish the Ministry's reputation,” he stated.
The Permanent Secretary also highlighted the importance of timely and precise information in crisis management and the need for closer collaboration with media organizations such as DICAN to counter misinformation.
“Often, providing necessary information proactively is vital for effective crisis management. We bear the responsibility of improving the country's image, which necessitates a strengthened partnership between DICAN and the Ministry,” he noted.
He stressed the importance of sharing accurate accounts of Nigeria's foreign policy, especially amidst increasing disinformation.
Ambassador Ahmed also praised DICAN for organizing the inaugural Diplomatic and Security International Conference, which gathered around 70 diplomats, security professionals, scholars, and civil society representatives to discuss strategies for global safety and peace.
In gratitude for the Ministry’s collaboration, DICAN Chairman remarked, “The Permanent Secretary has demonstrated a commitment to partnering with DICAN, and we value his efforts to promote a positive image of Nigeria.”
