LAGOS, Nigeria - The Lagos State government has disclosed that 30% of its employees who took study leave abroad did not return.
The Commissioner for Establishments, Pension, and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, shared this information on Wednesday during a ministerial press briefing celebrating the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's second term.
Ayantayo also revealed that 23,420 staff members participated in various training programs from May 2022 to December 2024.
He stated, "We recognize that training and capacity-building initiatives are essential for a dynamic and progressive Public Service, and this has been our main focus."
He further emphasized that the Ministry has consistently implemented extensive training programs to address skill shortages and improve the professional and adaptive competencies needed in the State Public Service.
"In partnership with top training institutions, the Ministry has improved workforce productivity, ethical standards, and leadership skills across different levels of government," he added.
Over this period, more than 120 training programs, including in-plant and in-service training, have been conducted, covering various levels, skill sets, and themes that enhance public sector efficiency, leadership development, and regulatory compliance. Topics include digital transformation, emotional intelligence, policy analysis, and project management.
The commissioner mentioned that the ministry has also focused on establishment issues, particularly regarding policy development, workforce planning, service regulations, and career advancement.
He assured that appointments, promotions, discipline, and record management are all conducted with merit, fairness, and due process.
