The Securities and Exchange Commission, in partnership with the African Development Bank, has emphasised the importance of embracing green finance as a means to address climate change and promote a sustainable economy in the country.
The Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Emomotimi Agama, made this announcement during a workshop for capital markets operators on green finance in Lagos.
Agama highlighted the risks posed by climate change and emphasised the need for embracing green finance to address these challenges.
He also pointed out that the initiatives led by the Federal Government and the Debt Management Office to fund afforestation and renewable energy projects, set a precedent for sustainable development.
Agama urged businesses to support this transition by adopting green finance principles and involving key stakeholders in discussions to promote green finance.
He also noted the increasing trend of sustainability-themed funds and emphasised the organisation's commitment to driving positive change through green finance initiatives.
Agama urged stakeholders to leverage coordinated policy advice, capacity building, and regulatory support to build momentum for a green economy.
