The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) on Wednesday advocated complete independence for Local Government Councils (LGCs) in order to promote effective governance in the country.
The Chairman of the RMAFC, Mr Mohammed Shehu, addressed the media in Abuja and urged the Federal Government to take legal measures to free LGCs from the strong influence of state governments.
He emphasized that LGCs, as the third tier of government, should operate independently to ensure effective governance at the grassroots level.
Shehu highlighted the need for LGCs to have political, administrative, and fiscal independence in order to provide quality service delivery and allow the people to choose their leaders.
He also stated that granting full autonomy to LGCs would lead to improved governance, reduced poverty, and better rural development, ultimately addressing security challenges and bringing more dividends of democracy to the people.
