LAGOS, Nigeria - The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) announced on Sunday that a cyclist lost his life after colliding with a moving truck on Obafemi Awolowo Way.
According to LASTMA's statement, initial investigations revealed that the cyclist was attempting to maneuver from Kudirat Abiola Way towards ‘Radio’ on Obafemi Awolowo Way when the collision occurred.
Unfortunately, he lost control during the maneuver, hit his head forcefully against the pavement, and died from his injuries instantly.
LASTMA officials swiftly arrived at the site to secure the area, ensuring the safety of other road users and maintaining traffic flow. Police officers from the Alausa Division were promptly informed and took appropriate action.
While managing traffic around the accident location, LASTMA operatives later transferred the deceased's remains to the police, who transported the body to the General Hospital mortuary in Ikeja.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the grieving family and emphasized the vital need for strict compliance with road safety measures.
He urged cyclists to wear appropriate protective gear and avoid distractions, including engaging in disputes with motor vehicles over right of way.
“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family of the deceased during this extremely challenging time. We strongly encourage all cyclists to focus on their safety and that of other road users by staying vigilant and properly equipped while using public roads,” he stated.
