The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has received the nod to join the Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS).
The NNPCL got the authorisation after obtaining the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code Compliance certification from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
The certification is expected to improve the company's reputation as a secure and trustworthy business destination, potentially leading to reduced insurance premiums.
The ISPS Code, overseen by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), is an amendment to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention (1974/1988) that sets out minimum security measures for ships, ports, and government agencies.
The NNPC’s Executive Vice President, Business Services, Mr. Inuwa Danladi, emphasized that the milestone would support the company's ongoing efforts towards process improvement, regulatory compliance and operational excellence.
Danladi highlighted the significance of the ISPS certification, which was issued in April 2024 and covers all NNPC jetties nationwide, in ensuring business continuity by preventing potential operational disruptions and financial losses.
He also outlined the rigorous processes involved in obtaining the certification, including the enhancement of security facilities at the nation’s ports and jetties, the establishment of the ISPS code command centre, and the engagement of a NIMASA Recognised Security Officer (RSO) to oversee key regulatory processes.
Furthermore, the executive vice president emphasized that the development of Port Facility Security Assessment (PFSA) & Port Facility Security Plan (PFSP), along with thorough Verification Inspection Exercises (VIE) conducted by NIMASA, demonstrates NNPC’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of maritime security.
