The inflation rate for April 2025 dropped to 23.71 percent, down from 24.23 percent in March 2025, marking a decrease of 0.52 percent.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed this information on Thursday, also indicating that the year-over-year food inflation rate for April 2025 stood at 21.26 percent.
Experts warn that Nigeria's food safety could be compromised without a ban on GMO foods, and the World Food Programme has highlighted unprecedented hunger levels in West and Central Africa. Additionally, Nigeria incurs annual losses of $3.6 billion due to foodborne diseases, resulting in 200,000 fatalities.
On a month-to-month scale, the food inflation rate for April 2025 was 2.06 percent, which is a decline of 0.12 percent from March 2025's 2.18 percent.
NBS attributed the drop to lower average prices for commodities including maize flour, wheat grain, dried okro, yam flour, soya beans, rice, bambara beans, and brown beans.
