Nigerian athletes left their mark at the 2025 Adidas Atlanta City Games on Saturday, with Favour Ofili showcasing an exceptional performance in the women’s 150 meters, setting a new world record of 15.85 seconds (2.0m/s) at Piedmont Park.
At just 22 years old, Ofili became the first woman to complete the seldom-run 150m in under 16 seconds, breaking the previous record of 16.23 seconds held by Bahamian Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo since 2018.
Ofili led the race effortlessly, finishing ahead of American Tamari Davis (16.14s) and Jamaica’s Ashanti Moore (16.50s).
Her achievement was noted during a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet, which featured a street event format designed to boost spectator engagement.
The 150m event, which is not included in the Olympic or World Championship schedule, is rarely contested, but Ofili’s time positions her at the pinnacle of the all-time rankings. This performance also underscored Nigeria's increasing influence on the global athletics scene.
Additionally, world 100m hurdles record holder Tobi Amusan competed, finishing second in her heat with a time of 12.53 seconds, trailing American Keni Harrison (12.44s).
Amusan advanced to the final, maintaining her strong 2025 season performance, following previous times of 12.74s and 12.66s in Xiamen and Keqiao.
In the men’s 100m, Nigerian sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike achieved a season-best time of 10.20 seconds in his heat, coming in second to South Africa’s Akani Simbine (10.13s), and securing his final spot while building momentum for his ongoing campaign.
While Ofili’s record garnered international attention, the event also showcased a broader representation by Team Nigeria, with several athletes competing against a field of top international talent in an open-air, city-center atmosphere.
