Nigerians will see an increase in the cost of their driver’s licences as the Joint Tax Board (JTB) has sanctioned a price hike. This new pricing will be implemented starting Sunday, June 8, 2025.
The JTB, which serves as the primary body for revenue authorities in Nigeria, is advising the affected public to be aware of the revised prices and is urging government agencies and motor vehicle licensing bodies to adhere to this new pricing structure.
According to an advertisement seen in a national publication, the new approved rates for driver’s licences and number plates are as follows: a motor vehicle driver’s licence valid for three years will cost N15,000, while a five-year licence will be N21,000. For tricycles and motorcycles, the cost for a three-year licence is N7,000 and N11,000 for five years.
The pricing for number plates varies by category: a standard private vehicle number plate is N30,000, as is a standard commercial number plate. An articulated vehicle number plate is priced at N90,000, while a dealer vehicle number plate is N100,000.
An out-of-series number plate will cost N150,000, a fancy vehicle number plate is N400,000, a government standard vehicle number plate is N80,000, and a government fancy vehicle number plate is N120,000.
Other prices include N12,000 for a motorcycle number plate, N50,000 for a fancy motorcycle number plate, N20,000 for a government standard motorcycle number plate, and N50,000 for a government fancy motorcycle number plate.
The JTB has explained that the price increase is due to new enhanced security features added to the number plates and drivers' licences, along with a rise in production expenses.
For additional details regarding the price adjustment, the JTB has indicated that information can be found on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) website at www.frsc.gov.ng, as well as through the Motor Licensing Authority (MLA) at the States’ Internal Revenue Service offices or Motor Vehicle Administration Authorities throughout the country.
