LAGOS, Nigeria - One of the construction workers who was trapped beneath the debris of the collapsed building in Idi Araba, located in the Mushin area of Lagos State, has been found dead.
The one-storey structure, which was still under construction, collapsed around 3:30 PM on Sunday.
Ibrahim Farinloye, the coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency in Lagos, confirmed this information in a statement.
"So far, we have confirmed one death, while three others have been successfully rescued," he stated.
"Search and rescue operations are still ongoing," he added. Shakiru Amodu, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, also verified that one victim had been recovered deceased.
In a separate statement, Margaret Adeseye, the director of the fire service, noted that the building was in the construction phase when it fell.
She also mentioned that three male adults had been rescued from the rubble and were currently receiving medical attention.
The report indicated, “A building under construction at the one-storey level unexpectedly collapsed at 96 Ishaga Road, directly across from Idi Araba Central Mosque in Mushin, Lagos. The distress call was made at around 3:30 PM.
The agencies that responded included the Isolo Fire Station of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Lagos State Ambulance Service, and the Nigeria Police.
Three adult males have been rescued alive with varying degrees of injuries, and they were treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital for further care by the Lagos State Ambulance Service.”
