Presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, recently returned from a reflective visit to the Vatican, where he participated in the Holy See's inauguration ceremony.
In a statement shared on Monday via X, he emphasized that his visit was not political and should not be viewed through a political lens. "I have just come back from the Vatican, and it was a deeply solemn and reflective visit.
My attendance at the inauguration ceremony aligns with my past experiences at various global inaugurations and official events, this was no different," he remarked.
He continued, "Such occasions hold profound moral and spiritual significance. This event was never meant to be political and should be kept free from politics. Certain moments are better suited for quiet reflection."
Obi also mentioned that he did not attend the Papal Audience and as a result, did not personally meet Pope Francis, explaining that the audience is reserved for heads of state and accredited diplomats.
"What should truly be our focus is the content and moral message conveyed in the Pope’s homily," Obi said, referencing the Pope’s call to combat poverty and promote a spirit of brotherhood beyond ethnic, political, and religious boundaries.
He stressed that the true value of the gathering lies not in ceremonial participation but in the readiness of attendees to act on the Pope’s message.
"The fight against corruption is crucial to building societies where resources are allocated to what truly matters, education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and infrastructure. These should be our primary concerns and the enduring message we take home from the Vatican," Obi declared.
He concluded by urging Nigerians in positions of power to commit to creating a more just, compassionate, and prosperous nation. Earlier on Sunday, President Bola Tinubu, Obi, and former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, had a brief meeting during the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV.
The encounter garnered attention on social media after being shared by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga on X, occurring during the religious ceremony attended by dignitaries globally.
