Kenyan police authorities have apprehended Nadeem Anjarwalla, an executive of the cryptocurrency platform Binance, who had previously fled from Nigeria.
Anjarwalla had evaded custody in Nigeria after the government cracked down on the cryptocurrency platform in an effort to stabilize the naira.
Subsequently, Anjarwalla was located in Kenya, where he is now reportedly in the custody of the Kenyan police, as confirmed by government sources in the country.
Following his escape from Nigeria, discussions have been ongoing between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the International Criminal Police, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Kenyan Police Service to extradite Anjarwalla.
In March, the EFCC announced its intention to extradite the Binance CEO in the agency's monthly bulletin. Ola Olukoyede, the head of the anti-corruption agency, stated that the decision to take over the prosecution of Binance executives sends a strong message about the EFCC's determination to combat distortions and disruptions in the country's foreign exchange market.
The charges against Binance Holdings Limited, Tigran Gambaryan, and Nadeem Anjarwalla, the company's CEOs, include tax evasion, currency speculation, and money laundering amounting to $35,400,000. While Gambaryan is currently in custody, efforts to extradite Anjarwalla are underway.
The EFCC is collaborating with Interpol, the FBI, and the governments of the UK, Northern Ireland, and Kenya to apprehend Anjarwalla, who is currently evading arrest. The goal is to bring him to trial in absentia alongside the company and Gambaryan.
