LAGOS, Nigeria —The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to launch essay and quiz competitions in French, to boost interest in the language.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Ali-Balogun, made this announcement during the handing over of digital equipment at the Multilingual International Resource Centre in Maryland, Lagos.
The initiative, which includes distributing electronic learning gadgets to 12 state-owned schools, is funded by France’s Solidarity Fund for Initiative Projects, designed to promote French as a practical means of communication and to foster job creation and trade opportunities with neighbouring countries.
Ali-Balogun said, “As French is an international language widely used in global business, we must inspire our children not only to read and write in French but also to deepen their interest by organising quizzes and essay competitions to enhance their learning.
“The technical adviser will review the proposal, and we aim to launch these competitions in our schools by next year. It’s all about partnerships and support. I’ve already hinted at the need for such initiatives in our schools, and I believe they will be implemented by the first quarter of next year.”
The Consul General of France in Lagos, Laurent Favier, said learning French does not serve as a means of communication only but also as a pathway for job creation.
Favier said, “Nigeria is bordered by French-speaking countries, making it essential for the nation to embrace the French language for effective transactions within Africa and on the international stage.
“Nigerians learning French as a second language is a significant advantage. Proficiency in French can open doors to job opportunities in countries like Australia, Italy, Germany, and France, as well as with organisations like the European Union and other international companies.
“This is why we provide support and equip schools in five states across the federation. These tools are specifically designed for teachers and students to enhance French language learning and create improved learning conditions.”
