In a bid to foster quality education in the country, the Federal Government has vowed to extend its continuous support and intervention in the education of special needs learners.
Dr Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission, said this in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital, during the capacity building workshop for teachers on the Inclusive Education Delivery Process.
He revealed that the federal government has pegged about two per cent of the consolidated Revenue Fund dedicated as an intervention fund for the implementation of the UBE programme allotted to special needs education.
According to him, “Since the commencement of the implementation of the Universal Basic Education programme in Nigeria, adequate attention has been paid to special needs education.
“Two per cent of the federal government Consolidated Revenue Fund dedicated as an intervention fund for the implementation of the UBE programme is allocated to Special Needs Education. This intervention will continue so that more learners can be assisted to break the barrier to quality education.”
He furthered that, “Of the 1,019 Special Basic schools captured during the UBEC 2022/2023 national personnel audit, government schools were 515 with an enrollment of 124,867 learners in basic education. There were 405 private schools with an enrollment of 51,140 learners.”
The Director of Special Programme, UBEC, Hajia Aisha Abdul, commended the commission for the initiative and called for inclusive educatio. implementation processes worldwide to build capacity for teachers .
