Popular Nigerian Disk DJ Neptune has revealed why some Nigerian artists suffer financially, despite their popularity.
During an appearance on the Zero Conditions Podcast, he discussed the consequences of poor financial planning and reckless spending among artists, especially during their prime years.
DJ Neptune emphasized that many musicians fail to grasp that stardom is frequently fleeting, prompting them to spend lavishly without contemplating their future.
He said: “Artists feel fame is forever; that’s why some of them, while at their peak, don’t save their money; they don’t invest. I was with somebody the other day, and the person was saying these artists collect advance payments and then go buy a Benz. Is that not the future you’re driving?”
He reflected on this statement, describing it as “deep” and a reality check for music industry professionals. DJ Neptune emphasized the importance of making smart financial decisions, advising artists to invest in assets or side businesses to create long-term stability. He noted that only a few artists are able to sustain their careers for more than five to ten years, making financial planning even more crucial.
“That’s why I tell some of my colleagues to invest your money while you are on top. If it’s properties you want to do, just have a side income,” he advised.
DJ Neptune concluded by reminding artists that as they grow older, their fan base might shift, and if they don’t adapt or plan, they could face financial difficulties later in life.
