Bassey Otu, the governor of Cross Rivers State, prohibited the use of commercial motorbikes, or "okadas," in Calabar.
Otu advised anyone who wanted to utilize their motorcycles for business to keep their operations in isolated regions.
The governor stated that the choice was made after consulting with the state's security chiefs in a statement released by his chief press secretary, Emmanuel Ogbeche.
"A complete ban on all commercial motorcyclists' activity within the Calabar metropolis.
"Remote locations outside of the city center are the only places where motorbike riders earn a decent living.
The message says, in part, "Anyone caught violating this directive will have the motorcycle impounded and the offender prosecuted."
