President Joe Biden signed a law on Wednesday that includes a provision that would ban TikTok in the United States if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, does not sell the app within a year.
The new law gives ByteDance nine months to find a buyer for TikTok, with the possibility of a three-month extension from President Biden if progress is shown. This is an increase from the original six-month timeframe proposed earlier.
The legislation had faced hurdles in the Senate after passing the House of Representatives. However, it was ultimately attached to a foreign aid package, which pressured the Senate to consider it.
This manoeuvre, along with the extended deadline for divestment, appears to have garnered enough support for passage.
The future of TikTok in the US now hinges on ByteDance's ability to find a new owner within the allotted timeframe.
