Uk Retailer Game To Cease Pre-Owned Video Game Business

POSTED ON January 16, 2024 •   Business      BY Segun Adewole •   VIEWS 51

Game, a prominent UK high street chain, has announced its intention to discontinue its pre-owned video game operations. The decision, disclosed by parent company Frasers Group, will involve the gradual phasing out of trade-ins in the coming months.

According to a spokesperson for Frasers Group, while the pre-owned games business will be discontinued, existing stocks will continue to be sold in the company's standalone stores. This move marks a significant shift and signals the end of a popular and more economical option for gamers seeking to purchase titles.

The decision, initially reported by Eurogamer, is framed within the broader context of the integration of Game within the Frasers Group portfolio. The spokesperson elaborated, stating, "As part of the integration of Game, we will be phasing out the trade-in, pre-owned, and Game Elite offerings in the UK over the coming months."

The discontinuation of the pre-owned video game business is expected to impact the gaming community, as many users have historically valued the affordability and accessibility of pre-owned titles. While the standalone stores will continue to offer pre-owned games until stocks are depleted, the announcement has generated discussions among gaming enthusiasts about potential implications for the industry.

Moreover, Game's decision will also see the conclusion of the Game Elite program in the UK by the end of the summer, further marking a shift in the company's business strategy. As the industry evolves and consumer preferences change, the move by Game reflects a dynamic landscape for retailers in the gaming sector.
