Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has come out against the recent arrest of media celebrity Martins Otse, also known as Verydarkman (VDM), highlighting the value of free expression.
In an Instagram video, Speed Darlington denounced the practice of detaining people for expressing their thoughts, emphasizing that such measures are inappropriate in a democratic country.
The contentious artist highlighted his personal experiences, claiming that he routinely criticizes others' work, including songs, without fear of punishment through legal measures such as litigation.
He stated that if his critiques have a detrimental impact on the subjects, such as decreased attendance at a church owing to noise pollution complaints, he may face legal ramifications in the form of a lawsuit rather than an arrest.
Speed Darlington's words were spurred by the recent arrest of VDM, who was reportedly detained over a controversy over alleged financial wrongdoing totaling N300 million.
Despite saying that he is not a supporter of VDM, Speed Darlington argued that people should not be arrested for expressing their opinions.
He urged that legal action, such as litigation, should be pursued rather than unjustified arrests.
