Nigeria's Favour Ofili has qualified for the women's 200 metres semi-final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Ofili recorded a season's best time of 22.24 seconds to win her heat, securing a spot in the semi-finals ahead of Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain and Gina Bass-Bittaye of Gambia.
However, Ofili was denied the opportunity to compete in the 100-metre race at the ongoing Olympics due to administrative failures by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the Nigerian Olympic Committee.
The Nigerian Sports Minister has stated that he will investigate the exclusion of Ofili from the 100m event.
"I am not concerned about other countries' issues. My focus is on Nigeria and the non-listing of Favour Ofili. I have been informed that World Athletics stated that AFN should have notified them about Ofili's omission from the final list published in July. However, this does not address the core issue. I want to know at what point her name was removed from the 100m race, who is responsible, and what is the motivation behind this. I also want to understand the communication trail from AFN to NOC and IOC or World Athletics."
