OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Tuesday that the AI safety leader Aleksander Madry was embarking on a new research project, while the startup reorganises its preparedness team.
Altman stated that Madry was focusing on an important new research project, and in the meantime, OpenAI executives Joaquin Quinonero Candela and Lilian Weng would be taking over the preparedness team.
The preparedness team evaluates the readiness of the company's AI models for artificial general intelligence, and Madry will assume a larger role within the research organisation.
The Information first reported Madry's move and mentioned that researcher Tejal Patwardhan would manage much of the team's work.
These changes are happening as OpenAI's chatbots, capable of human-like conversations and generating videos and images from text prompts, raise safety concerns due to their increasing power.
Earlier this year, OpenAI established a Safety and Security Committee, led by board members including CEO Sam Altman, in preparation for training its next artificial intelligence model, which is backed by Microsoft.
