Edo state Governor Godwin Obaseki has expressed gratitude for media criticism, stating that it played a pivotal role in molding him into a better and stronger leader. He emphasized the importance of a robust press in fostering democracy.
He stated this during a candid address during the 2023 Christmas Party with journalists at the Edo State Council Secretariat.
Governor Obaseki acknowledged the constructive criticism received over the last seven years, highlighting the significance of media scrutiny in shaping policies and administration. He attributed the success of his administration to the vigilance and professionalism of the press, noting their role in driving achievements and ensuring accountability.
Addressing the journalists, he stated, “You have been one of the pillars of the success of my administration over the last seven years. If we didn’t have you, maybe we would have just slacked and not been driven to achieve most of what we achieved."
He expressed his perspective on criticism, saying, "I don’t see criticism as a bad thing; if anything, it helps us check ourselves on what we are doing. You will have a stunted democracy if you do not have a virile press."
Governor Obaseki endorsed the professional work of journalists, emphasizing the need for a strong, virile, and critical press in a democracy. He explained his composed response to criticism, stating, "So I am one of those who endorse all the professional things you do as journalists. That’s why you have never seen me one day get angry and use untoward words to react to things I read and hear."
Reflecting on the achievements of his administration, he highlighted the restoration of the value of lives for Edo girls and women and the deliberate policy against illegal migration. He expressed pride in the transformation of the state, especially in rebuilding the image of Edo people. "Today, if we have not achieved anything, we have achieved the Edo pride. The world now knows that the empire was not a fluke," he stated.
In conclusion, Governor Godwin Obaseki praised the media for their role in shaping democracy and reiterated his commitment to continuous improvement guided by constructive criticism.
