The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has urged President Bola Tinubu to step in regarding the ongoing local government dispute in the state.
The party's chairman, Sunday Bisi, issued this appeal during the League of Veterans Journalists meeting on Wednesday in Osogbo.
The PDP contends that the February 10 ruling by the Court of Appeal in Akure did not restore the ousted All Progressives Congress chairmen and councillors.
In contrast, the APC has insisted that the chairmen and councillors elected in 2022 be reinstated.
The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees subsequently instructed local government workers to cease their duties starting February 17 due to security issues.
Additionally, on June 13, the Court of Appeal in Akure rejected an application from the APC, which aimed to relist a previous appeal that had been dismissed on January 13 due to lack of diligent prosecution.
The state government asserted that the Court of Appeal's decision upheld the Federal High Court ruling that dismissed the council chairmen and councillors elected in 2022.
Bisi stated that presidential intervention was critical to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the state, alleging that the current crisis in the local government areas stemmed from the APC's refusal to comply with the Court of Appeal's ruling.
He emphasized that the judgment affirmed that the PDP chairmen elected on February 22 were legitimate.
“We have distributed copies of the judgment to all relevant authorities, and we are awaiting their response to ensure justice is served. Our goal is to serve the people of the state.
We will pursue all legal avenues to ensure justice prevails, and we will not be lured into the opposition's tactics aiming for a state of emergency in Osun,” he stated.
