Kebbi Vows to Tackle Informants Aiding Bandits

Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris

KEBBI, Nigeria - Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has pledged to take action against informants who assist criminal gangs during his condolence visit to the Zuru Emirate, following recent deadly attacks by bandits in Tadurga village, Zuru Local Government, and Kyabu, Danko Wasagu Local Government Area.

The governor, who visited the affected areas on Tuesday, condemned the attacks as "barbaric" and reaffirmed his government's dedication to protecting the lives and property of citizens.

"We are deeply troubled by the horrific attack that resulted in the loss of innocent lives. I assure you that this administration will not waver in its responsibility to safeguard all communities in Kebbi State," Idris stated.

He criticized the role of informants in the communities, announcing that the state government is contemplating changing its laws to impose capital punishment or life imprisonment for those convicted of supporting banditry.

"These criminals do not operate alone; they depend on local informants who live among us. We are proposing stricter laws that would enforce the death penalty or a life sentence for anyone found aiding or abetting criminal activities," he added.

Idris called on traditional leaders and community heads to enhance vigilance and swiftly report any suspicious individuals to security forces.

He emphasized, "We must all stay alert. Any unfamiliar face should be reported immediately for questioning." To enhance security in the region, the governor revealed that he has formally requested the establishment of a permanent military base in the Zuru area, along with more personnel to secure at-risk regions.

He also warned those he termed “anti-progress elements” against spreading falsehoods about his administration’s security initiatives and development projects, particularly regarding the Koko-Dabai-Zuru road project.

In response, the Emir of Zuru, Maj.-Gen. Muhammad Sani (retd.), praised Idris for his swift visit and proactive security measures. "Your efforts since taking office have resulted in noticeable improvements, especially concerning security and infrastructure," said the emir.

The Chief of Danko Wasagu, Abubakar Ibrahim Alaji, and the Chief of Dabai, Alhaji Suleiman Sani, both urged for the immediate creation of a military outpost to protect border communities between Kebbi and Zamfara States.

The governor’s visit is part of ongoing initiatives to reassure residents and strengthen the security framework in one of Kebbi's most troubled areas.
