Macron Condemns Strikes On Civilian Infrastructure In Israel-Hamas Conflict

POSTED ON November 15, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole

French President Emmanuel Macron, during his state visit to Switzerland on Wednesday, delivered a robust condemnation of the bombardment of civilian infrastructure in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Macron, while defending France's "balanced" approach to the situation, expressed deep concern about the impact of such attacks on innocent civilians.

In a press conference in Bern, Macron declared, "We condemn in the strongest terms all bombardment of civilians and, in particular, civilian infrastructure, which must be protected under international law." The French leader's statement came in response to a question regarding the Israeli military raid on Gaza's main hospital, Al-Shifa, on the same day. The raid, conducted as part of Israel's offensive against Hamas, has raised alarming concerns for the safety of thousands of patients and civilians reportedly trapped inside the medical facility.

Macron's condemnation underscores France's commitment to upholding international humanitarian principles, emphasizing the need to safeguard civilian lives and essential infrastructure during armed conflicts. The Israeli military's actions at Al-Shifa Hospital have intensified worries about the humanitarian impact of the conflict, with global attention turning to the plight of civilians caught in the crossfire.

As the Israel-Hamas conflict continues to escalate, Macron's strong stance positions France as a vocal advocate for the protection of civilians and adherence to international legal norms. The French president's comments contribute to the international discourse surrounding the complex and sensitive dynamics of the conflict, highlighting the importance of addressing humanitarian concerns amidst the ongoing violence in the region.
