Israel Has Right To Exist, Germany's President Tells Erdogan

POSTED ON November 17, 2023 •   GLOBAL NEWS      BY Segun Adewole

During discussions in Berlin on Friday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized Israel's unequivocal right to exist and to defend itself. The meeting took place against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny over Erdogan's recent remarks that raised questions about Israel's legitimacy.

In response to Turkey's statements on the Middle East conflict, President Steinmeier's spokeswoman took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to convey Germany's firm position. The president made it explicit that Germany staunchly supports Israel's right to exist and, crucially, its right to self-defense.

The reaffirmation of Israel's legitimacy and its entitlement to self-defense underscores the delicate diplomatic terrain the leaders navigated during their talks. Erdogan's previous comments had sparked concerns and had prompted Germany to articulate its stance on the matter, aligning itself with international consensus on Israel's right to exist within secure borders.

President Steinmeier's commitment to conveying Germany's position through social media platforms highlights the role of modern communication channels in shaping and disseminating diplomatic messages. The clarity provided by the German president not only serves as a diplomatic signal to Turkey but also underscores the significance of public statements in international relations.

As the leaders engage in discussions that intertwine geopolitical complexities and regional dynamics, the affirmation of Israel's rights becomes a pivotal point in the ongoing discourse surrounding the Middle East conflict. The outcome of these talks will likely reverberate in the broader diplomatic landscape, emphasizing the importance of upholding principles that contribute to stability and peace in the region.
