Von Der Leyen Declares Start Of Post-Fossil Era

POSTED ON December 30, 2023 •   Energy      BY Segun Adewole

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, heralded a landmark achievement on Wednesday, proclaiming the COP28 climate summit deal as the commencement of a new world free from the dependency on coal and oil.

In a significant declaration on social media, von der Leyen stated, "Today's agreement marks the beginning of the post-fossil era." The high-profile EU chief highlighted the historic nature of the accord, characterizing it as a pivotal step toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious global landscape.

Key to the success of the agreement, according to von der Leyen, is the substantial contribution from Europe. She asserted, "A crucial part of this historic deal is truly made in Europe. The whole world endorsed our 2030 targets: to triple renewable energy and to double energy efficiency, both by 2030."

The European Commission President's emphasis on the global endorsement of the EU's 2030 targets underscores the significance of collaborative efforts in addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change. The commitment to tripling renewable energy and doubling energy efficiency within the next decade reflects a concerted push for tangible and ambitious climate action.

As the COP28 summit concluded, von der Leyen's optimistic outlook resonated with the broader narrative of a collective commitment to a more sustainable and greener future. The declaration of a post-fossil era signifies a paradigm shift in energy dynamics, with the EU leading the charge towards a cleaner and more environmentally responsible global community.
