APM Terminals Apapa has announced the commencement of a recycling initiative to transform discarded tires into flip-flops.
This initiative is in line with the global awareness campaign, Go Green, which focuses on sustainable business practices and minimizing environmental impact. The theme of the campaign is "Nothing goes to waste."
The APM Terminals Manager, Steen Knudsen, emphasized the company's commitment to continuously improve and repurpose waste sustainably.
The terminal has partnered with government-licensed environmental organizations to achieve this goal. In addition to recycling tires, the terminal has also taken steps to reduce plastic waste and repurpose discarded boiler suits and lubricants.
The eco-friendly flip-flops are crafted from 70% recycled tires sourced from the terminal's equipment used for cargo operations.
This initiative helps to save a minimum of 7.5 kilograms of CO2 emissions per pair, contributing to waste reduction and climate change mitigation.
As part of the campaign, the terminal conducted an awareness session for employees on the importance of incorporating sustainable business practices.
This session was held in collaboration with Kevron Consulting Limited, a provider of Health Safety and Environmental Services. Felix Ugwuagbo, the HSE Manager of APMT Apapa, also emphasized the significance of this initiative.
