Stakeholders in the technology ecosystem are persistently advocating for significant investments in young girls to address the substantial gender gap in the sector.
The gender gap is a cause for concern, and stakeholders are actively seeking strategies to address the issue. Currently, only 22 percent of AI workers globally are women, and the rate of women being hired for tech leadership roles has stagnated.
At the 12th edition of the International Girls in ICT Campaign celebration organized by eBusiness Life Communication Limited in Lagos, participants urged parents and corporate organizations to make collaborative efforts to invest in young girls, enabling them to prepare for future careers in technology.
Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), urged girls to stay updated with the evolving trends in technology and strive for excellence to make a difference in the future workforce.
He emphasized that there will always be gaps to be filled in the ICT field and highlighted the importance of encouraging young girls and women to consider careers in ICT, as they represent half of the global population.
Maida also stressed that investing in these girls is an investment in the nation's future.
He pointed out that the ICT sector offers exciting and well-paid career opportunities, from software development to data analysis, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. By encouraging more girls and women to enter the ICT field, the digital divide can be bridged, ensuring equal access to opportunities in the digital age.
