A former Minister of Transportation,Rotimi Amaechi, has left the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He expressed that Nigeria is in a dire state and urgently requires a thorough restructuring.
During an event in Abuja on Wednesday for the unveiling of the African Democratic Congress interim executive, Amaechi accused both the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission of collaborating to manipulate the upcoming elections.
He remarked, “Nigeria is in ruins. People are struggling to afford food. There’s a lack of funds for basic necessities. Inflation is soaring,” he noted.
Amaechi confirmed his departure from the APC on Tuesday night and was taken aback that he hadn't been expelled yet, having cautioned party leaders against inviting him to further meetings.
“You can’t remain in a group where the vast majority are engaging in theft without speaking up,” he asserted.
When questioned about advocating for change rather than backing the existing government, he stated that the issue extends beyond merely changing the ruling party; it’s about addressing the root problems in Nigeria itself.
“It’s about transforming Nigeria. We need to initiate a movement that autonomously takes control of the government, not us,” he commented.
Regarding President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Amaechi remarked, “I’ve never viewed Tinubu as fit to govern the nation… People are wishing for Buhari's return.”
He compared the current economic situation to that under former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting the drastic fall of the naira.
“The dollar was around ₦460 or a bit over five hundred, but now it stands at ₦1,580. That’s an increase of over 100%,” he explained.
When asked whether the declining exchange rate might be an intentional government strategy, Amaechi responded, “Regardless of whether it's a deliberate policy, a government that ignores the needs of its citizens is not truly governing.
President Tinubu has indicated he is not here to satisfy Nigerians." Regarding his political aspirations, he stated, “I have the right to be ambitious; I’m not overly ambitious.”
