The Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Pius Akutah, has said that the economic consequences of abandoned or delayed export cargoes at the country's seaports are detrimental to exporters, their banks, and the overall economy of the nation.
He explained that the commercial banks participating in those transactions also suffered losses, adding that ultimately all those losses had a negative impact on the country's economy.
The Head of the NCS expressed concern over the amount of time wasted at the port for export cargo, especially as the government aimed to broaden the economy's export opportunities.
Also, Kayode Daniel, the Government Relations Manager at APM Terminals, reported that there were 1,940 export containers at Apapa Port for 0-10 days, 1,524 containers for 11-20 days, 757 containers for 21-30 days, and 616 containers for over 31 days, classifying them as abandoned.
He said the APM terminals had been advocating for the removal of those trapped export containers and had secured a commitment from shipping lines such as Maersk, CMA CGA, and Zim to transport about 2,752 export containers out of the port.
