In light of calls for the release of the detained Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), David Umahi, the Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, stated that this release is not a prerequisite for the South-East’s support of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Addressing the suggestions that the South-East had set conditions, including Kanu’s release, Umahi expressed his belief that Kanu's freedom would come through divine intervention and dialogue rather than coercion or political maneuvers.
He remarked, “When someone inquired about Nnamdi Kanu, I clarified that his situation does not serve as a condition for the South-East's backing of the President.
We are open to discussing his release, but it should not be made a stipulation since the President did not imprison him.”
In an interview on Friday, Umahi characterized Tinubu as an attentive leader, asserting, “While President Tinubu may not be flawless, he is executing many things correctly.”
He pointed out significant infrastructure initiatives undertaken by the Tinubu administration in the South-East, such as the restoration of roads neglected by previous administrations. “Consider the economic state he inherited.
The global community trusts his reforms, which is why we are receiving support for our projects. Those criticizing the President should demonstrate what they have contributed to the nation,” he stated.
Umahi dismissed allegations that the South-East is being overlooked in federal appointments, claiming that Tinubu has done more for the region than many former leaders.
He urged for unity among political figures, irrespective of party lines, emphasizing that governors from the South-East, including those from opposition parties, are collaborating effectively with the President.
Umahi affirmed that he has no plans to run for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027, stating, “I will not campaign.
I will serve my boss, President Tinubu. The APC is the way to accomplish our goals.
The South-East now has representation at the national level. We will not revert to past hardships.”
