The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Olubunmi Kuku, has expressed concerns about the N23.1 billion allocated for the rehabilitation and repair of airport facilities nationwide, stating that it is inadequate.
Kuku made these remarks during an interview on The Morning Brief, a Channels TV program, on Tuesday.
According to Kuku, the allocated amount may not be enough to address the urgent need for improvements in airport terminal areas, landsides, and air sides.
Emphasizing the critical nature of the aviation sector, particularly airports, Kuku highlighted the necessity for substantial capital investment.
Kuku pointed out that the Federal Government, through FAAN, manages 22 airports and subsidizes the remaining 19. Additionally, FAAN provides support to some new airports under development.
She also mentioned that FAAN supports airports owned by state governments or private entities with aviation security or fire and rescue services.
Kuku noted that only three out of the 22 airports are currently profitable and contribute significantly to the sustainability of the airport companies under FAAN's management.
She further explained that FAAN is cross-subsidizing the other 19 airports and will continue to provide support as needed.
