Erdogan Vows To Forge A 'New Era' In Relations With Greece

POSTED ON December 7, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole

In a landmark visit to Athens, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his commitment to ushering in a "new era" in bilateral relations with long-standing rival Greece. This marks Erdogan's first official visit to the Greek capital since 2017, with discussions centering on trade, regional matters, and the persistent challenge of migration.

During a five-hour visit, Erdogan engaged in crucial talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. The Turkish leader conveyed his optimism about the potential for a transformative shift in relations, emphasizing the need for a positive outlook to yield fruitful results in the future.

In a statement to President Sakellaropoulou, Erdogan outlined his ambitious vision to elevate the economic ties between the two nations. He pledged to nearly double the current bilateral trade volume from $5.5 billion to an ambitious $10 billion (€9.3 billion), signaling a substantial commitment to fostering economic cooperation.

The visit comes against the backdrop of longstanding tensions and historical disputes between Turkey and Greece. Erdogan's diplomatic overtures underscore a desire to overcome differences and establish a strategic cooperation that addresses shared concerns. Talks are anticipated to delve into a spectrum of issues, including regional dynamics and the intricate challenge of migration.

As both leaders engage in dialogue, the international community watches closely, recognizing the potential for a significant shift in the dynamics between these neighboring nations. The outcome of these high-stakes discussions could shape the trajectory of Turkish-Greek relations, heralding a pivotal chapter in their complex history.
