ONDO, Nigeria - The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reports that approximately 14 million Nigerians are believed to engage in the abuse of harmful drugs.
During a drug awareness program organized by the Oijefon youth for secondary schools in Ile Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area, the deputy commander of the NDLEA for Ondo State, Yetunde Joyifous, stated on Wednesday.
Joyifous stated that the drugs primarily used are chemical substances that adversely affect users' mental states. She emphasized that collaborating with community stakeholders is essential in combating this significant issue.
“I want to extend my gratitude to the Oijefon Youth Council for collaborating with the NDLEA to address drug abuse in society,” she remarked.
She further described young individuals, particularly those in secondary schools, as the most vulnerable targets of drug abuse, stressing the need for intensified efforts to protect them from falling into such behaviors.
In his welcome address, Adedokun Adeyonu, the president of the Oijefon Youth Council, mentioned that the council organized this sensitization program to deter youths from drug abuse. He defined drug abuse as the harmful use of substances like alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs, which can damage both body and mind.
He noted that many individuals turn to drugs due to curiosity, peer pressure, or as a means to cope with life’s challenges, mistakenly believing it to be a solution.
Adeyonu also pointed out that peer influence, as well as exposure to movies and music, can drive youths toward drug abuse.
He urged society to assist in fostering a prosperous life for the younger generation.
The event drew participation from secondary school students in Ile Oluji and officials from the National Orientation Agency (NOA).
