The Oyo State Government has urged residents to increase their vigilance, maintain good sanitation, and take preventive measures to combat the spread of cholera.
The call was made in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Abdulmoheed Mogbonjubola.
He stated that the World Health Organisation had confirmed the ongoing cholera outbreak in some parts of Nigeria as part of the global resurgence of cases of the disease.
The outbreak is classified as a grade 3 public health emergency, requiring a maximal WHO system-wide response.
Nigeria has been identified as one of the 14 countries in Africa experiencing the resurgence, but currently, Oyo state has no confirmed cholera cases as suspected cases have tested negative.
The Commissioner emphasized that the cholera outbreak in neighbouring states had prompted the government to heighten its vigilance.
He urged residents to maintain good sanitation and hygiene practices at home and in their workplace, and to take preventive measures such as keeping their environment clean and disposing of waste properly.
Mogbonjubola said the state government had initiated a community awareness campaign for cholera prevention, increased surveillance, provided resources for safe water, and ensured that health facilities are prepared to handle any potential cases
