A vessel laden with 150,000 litres of stolen crude oil was set ablaze on Saturday, July 7, in Delta State by operatives of Tantita Security Limited and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
The vessel, MT TURA II (IMO Number:6620462) with Registration Number, RC 813311, was reportedly owned by Holab Maritime Services Limited. It was intercepted while conveying crude oil from Nigeria to Cameron with 11 Nigerians and one Ghanaian onboard.
The vessel was destroyed in a joint operation by the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Airforce, Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corps, NNPC, and officials of the Delta State Government.
Capt. Warredi Enisuoh, Executive Director on Technical Operations at Tantita Security Limited, said the decision to destroy the vessel was made to send a strong message to all would-be investors in the illegal bunkering business.
"The whole idea of destroying the vessel is to send a strong message to all would-be investors that this is what they're to face if they tow this type of business," Enisuoh said. "Illegal bunkerers and their sponsors should be ready to lose their assets as the government and security forces will do all it takes to bring them to book."
The destruction of MT TURA II is a significant victory in the fight against oil theft in Nigeria. It sends a clear message to criminals that their activities will not be tolerated. It also shows that the government and security forces are committed to protecting Nigeria's oil resources.
