Ukraine's military intelligence agency, GUR has accused the management of the Telegram messaging platform of blocking several official bots that actively opposed Russia's military aggression against Ukraine.
GUR conveyed its discontent in a statement posted on Telegram, declaring, "Today, the management of the Telegram platform unreasonably blocked a number of official bots that opposed Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, including the main Intelligence bot."
Despite the setback, GUR assured users, "Despite the blocking of our bot - your personal data is safe."
A bot, as described by GUR, is a software application designed to execute specific tasks independently. It can simulate conversations with individuals and gather content among other functionalities.
Founded by Russian-born Pavel Durov and headquartered in Dubai, Telegram has emerged as one of the most popular social media platforms globally.
Durov, who departed Russia in 2014, declined government demands to shut down opposition communities on another social media platform he had previously sold.
Since Russia initiated its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Telegram has served as a crucial tool for governments and individuals seeking unfiltered information about the war.
Major media outlets, government entities, and public figures from both Russia and Ukraine maintain active channels on the platform.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy utilizes Telegram to share daily video addresses, while the country's armed forces utilize the platform to alert citizens about air raids and provide updates on battlefield developments.
Similarly, the Kremlin uses Telegram to announce President Vladimir Putin's activities, while Russia's opposition leverages the platform to rally support.
