Los Angeles prosecutors are considering new evidence that could result in the release or retrial of two brothers convicted for murdering their parents in their Beverly Hills house.
The case has received attention in recent weeks because a Netflix dramatisation of their narrative, which has sparked claims of "dishonesty" from Erik Menendez, is currently at the top of the streaming service's viewing chart.
Lyle Menendez, 56, and his 53-year-old brother Erik are serving life sentences without parole for the 1989 shotgun killings.
Their father and mother, Jose and Kitty Menendez, were shot many times at close range. Lyle was 21 and Erik was 18 at the time.
The Los Angeles District Attorney, George Gascon, stated on Thursday that the brothers would face a court hearing in November after his office received additional information that reportedly confirmed Erik Menendez's claims of sexual assault by his father, a music mogul.
The brothers claimed they killed their parents in self-defence following years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse from them.
Their lawyers believed that because of shifting societal attitudes about sexual assault, the brothers should not have been convicted of first-degree murder and condemned to life without parole today.
Prosecutors at the time claimed there was no evidence of any molestation. They said the brothers were pursuing their parents' multimillion dollar wealth.
He said: "I totally stand with them, and I support them, and I can only hope that the justice system makes the right decision."
