OpenAI has added a former high-ranking US cyberwarfare and intelligence official to its board of directors, stating that he will assist in safeguarding the ChatGPT creator from "increasingly sophisticated malicious actors."
Paul Nakasone, a retired Army General, previously served as the commander of US Cyber Command and the director of the National Security Agency before stepping down earlier this year.
He is now a part of the OpenAI board of directors, which has been undergoing changes following internal upheaval at the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company.
The previous board had dismissed CEO Sam Altman abruptly, only to be replaced itself as he returned to his CEO role shortly after.
OpenAI reinstated Altman to its board in March and expressed full confidence in his leadership after an external investigation.
Nakasone is also joining OpenAI's new safety and security committee, which is tasked with advising the full board on crucial safety and security decisions for its projects and operations. This committee replaced a previous safety team that was disbanded after several of its leaders resigned.
Prior to his involvement with OpenAI, Nakasone held significant roles within the US Cyber Command and the NSA, serving as the director during President Donald Trump's administration and continuing into President Joe Biden's term until his retirement in February.
