In a collaborative effort to address the longstanding issue of clean water scarcity in the Apapa Local Development Council Area (LCDA) of Lagos, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has joined forces with the local council to provide clean water to residents through the revitalization of the Apapa Mini-Water Works.
Chairman of Apapa LCDA, Idowu Senbanjo, announced this partnership on Tuesday, emphasizing that the initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring the availability and sustained management of water and sanitation for all.
Senbanjo highlighted the challenges faced by the community due to the absence of potable water, leading to increased cases of waterborne diseases. The Chairman expressed gratitude for the support received from the NPA, the main financier of the project.
The project, initiated to address the water crisis, revealed the deteriorating state of existing water reticulations, some of which had been abandoned for close to 15 years. Senbanjo underscored the significance of correcting these issues to guarantee residents access to clean and potable water.
Chairman of Apapa Residence Developmental Committee, Rear Admiral Austin Oyagha (retd), explained the establishment of a committee to address the water supply issue. Oyagha acknowledged the NPA's sponsorship through one of its subsidiaries, noting the reconstruction of Liverpool Road and the repair of damaged reticulations.
During a facility tour, Oluwabi Ayodele, the Southwest Regional Business Manager of Lagos Water Corporation, commended the chairman and stakeholders for their efforts in ensuring the success of the project. Ayodele urged Apapa residents to collaborate with the Lagos State Water Corporation, providing feedback on reticulation effectiveness and reporting any leaks promptly.
Ayodele emphasized that buildings without the water facility could benefit from the project by registering with the office, further encouraging community involvement in maintaining and sustaining the clean water initiative.
