Former Meta executive Jason Taylor has been appointed to Microsoft's AI supercomputing team.

The news was announced by Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott in a LinkedIn post on Monday, revealing Taylor's new role as corporate vice president and deputy CTO, where he will play a pivotal role in advancing the boundaries of AI technology.

Taylor brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at Meta, where he worked from 2009 to 2022. During his time at Meta, Taylor held the position of vice president of infrastructure, overseeing crucial aspects such as AI, data, and privacy infrastructure.

His responsibilities also included managing the company's server budgets and showcasing his expertise in optimizing technological resources.

Additionally, Taylor served as the chair of the Open Compute Project Foundation from 2015 to 2017, demonstrating his commitment to promoting open-source designs in data centres.

The move comes at a time when both Microsoft and OpenAI are striving to enhance their hardware capabilities to keep pace with the rapid advancements in AI systems.

Recent reports have suggested that Microsoft and OpenAI are exploring the development of a formidable $100 billion supercomputer, codenamed "Stargate," to power OpenAI's sophisticated models.

However, Scott appears to refute some of these rumours in his LinkedIn post, indicating that much of the speculation surrounding the project is inaccurate.

Microsoft's commitment to bolstering its AI capabilities was further underscored in March with the appointment of Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind, as the CEO of a new consumer AI division.

Suleyman's leadership will oversee pivotal Microsoft products such as Copilot, Bing, and Edge, reflecting the company's strategic focus on advancing AI-driven technologies in consumer-facing platforms.

Taylor's addition to Microsoft's AI supercomputing team signals a concerted effort by the tech giant to assemble top talent capable of driving innovation and shaping the future of AI technology.

As the industry continues to evolve, Microsoft's ongoing investments in AI research and development underscore its commitment to remaining at the forefront of technological innovation.
