England Beat Fiji In Rugby World Cup Quarter-Final

POSTED ON October 15, 2023 •   Sports      BY Segun Adewole
England secured their spot in the Rugby World Cup semi-finals with a heart-pounding 30-24 victory over Fiji, thanks to a late drop goal and penalty by Owen Farrell. The match, held in Marseille, witnessed an intense battle between the two teams, with England prevailing in a thriller. Early in the game, it appeared that England would comfortably secure a semi-final berth, with first-half tries from Manu Tuilagi and Joe Marchant seemingly setting them on that path. However, Fiji mounted a stirring fightback, scoring tries through Viliame Mata, Peni Ravai, and Vilimoni Botitu, making it a close contest. Ultimately, it was Owen Farrell's 20 points from the boot that proved decisive for England. Fiji, eager to make history with their first-ever appearance in the World Cup semi-finals, were denied this opportunity as they fell at the quarter-final stage for the third time. The island nation showcased their renowned defensive prowess early in the game, winning turnovers and keeping the pressure on England. Farrell, with his accuracy, notched a couple of crucial penalties for England. A powerful try by Tuilagi, who burst through two tacklers, was a pivotal moment in the first half. However, a yellow card was shown to Vinaya Habosi after a head-on-head tackle during the build-up to England's second try. Despite playing with 14 men, Fiji demonstrated resilience and struck back with a cleverly orchestrated try by Viliame Mata. England, though, managed to regain control, with Farrell adding two more penalties before the halftime whistle, resulting in a 21-10 lead. The match remained fiercely competitive, keeping fans on the edge of their seats throughout. England's victory secured their spot in the semi-finals, where they would face the winner of the France-South Africa clash in what promises to be an exhilarating continuation of the Rugby World Cup.
