Belgian football star Dries Mertens has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned multiple countries and clubs.
The 33-year-old forward revealed that his decision was driven by a combination of fatigue, age, and other personal challenges.
Mertens confirmed that he will hang up his boots at the close of the current season, following the expiration of his contract with Turkish giants, Galatasaray—a deal that was not renewed by the club.
During his time with Galatasaray, Mertens made over 100 appearances and was a key figure in their attacking lineup.
Before calling time on his career, Mertens will feature in one final exhibition match in July, held in honour of his former Napoli teammate and close friend, Marek Hamsik.
Best known for his explosive stint at Napoli—where he scored 20 goals and became a fan favourite—Mertens played for seven professional clubs across Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and Turkey.
His technical flair, goal-scoring prowess, and versatility made him a standout performer throughout his journey in European football.
As he prepares for his farewell match, fans across the globe are reflecting on Mertens’ enduring legacy and the unforgettable moments he brought to the beautiful game.
