The Federal Government has at last honored its long-standing commitment to provide housing allocations to members of the 1994 Super Eagles squad who won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
This announcement was made through a statement on the ministry's website on Wednesday. One of the recipients, former striker Efan Ekoku, received an allocation letter for a house in Abuja, represented at a brief ceremony by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun.
The Director and Head of the Public Building and Housing Development Department, Pemi Temitope, presented the letter on behalf of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
Temitope noted that this action reflects the government's dedication to recognizing the patriotic service of the team, which brought pride to the nation three decades ago.
Nwagbogun expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for fulfilling this long-awaited promise to her uncle, emphasizing that it is encouraging to see such commitment to integrity.
She stated, "This gesture not only honors Mr. Efan Ekoku's contributions but also restores confidence in the importance of keeping public promises."
It is worth noting that former President Muhammadu Buhari gave the green light for the realization of the 1994 housing pledge in 2022, 28 years after it was initially made.
Housing units are being distributed to team members across various states, with some, like Ekoku, receiving theirs in Abuja.
