AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Chad, Others Qualify For Group Phase Stage

POSTED ON March 27, 2024 •   Sports      BY Samuel O . Adeniyi •   VIEWS 146

Chad, Eswatini, Liberia, and South Sudan are celebrating after securing their spots in the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Morocco 2025.

All four teams emerged victorious from tense second-leg matches of the preliminary stage played on Tuesday.

Eswatini held off a determined Somalia side, drawing 2-2 at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, South Africa.

However, their dominant 3-0 win in the first leg ensured a comfortable 5-2 aggregate victory.

Chad mirrored Eswatini's success, edging past Mauritius 2-1 at the National Sports Complex Pitch 1 in Saint Pierre. This win, coupled with their 1-0 advantage from the first leg, sealed their progression with a 3-1 aggregate score.

Liberia, despite being held to a goalless draw by Djibouti at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia, progressed on the strength of their 2-0 first-leg win, securing a 2-0 aggregate victory.

South Sudan also faced a tense encounter, drawing 0-0 with Sao Tome and Principe in Berkane, Morocco.

However, their crucial away goal from the first leg's 1-1 draw proved decisive, sending them through on the away goals rule.

These hard-fought victories mean Chad, Eswatini, Liberia, and South Sudan can now set their sights on the next stage of the qualifiers.

They'll join the 44 pre-qualified nations in the group stage, all vying for a coveted spot in the prestigious African football tournament to be held in Morocco.
