The Jigawa State Government has enhanced its disease surveillance systems and public awareness initiatives to halt the spread of diseases within the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Abdullahi Kainuwa, revealed this while addressing the media about the state's efforts to prevent disease outbreaks.
This action comes in response to reports of a cholera outbreak in various states of Nigeria, including neighboring Kano State.
Kainuwa clarified that cholera outbreaks have been a recurring challenge in Jigawa State, particularly during the early rainy season.
He emphasized, "Through collaborative efforts involving the state government, National Primary Healthcare, and donor partners, the occurrence and impact of the disease have been effectively managed over the past two years, with no current reported cases of cholera in the state."
"We have activated disease surveillance systems across 287 political wards in the 27 local government areas of the state to preempt any potential outbreaks."
"Additionally, we have initiated public awareness campaigns to educate and encourage proactive measures within communities, with a focus on personal and environmental hygiene, as well as the avoidance of consuming unsafe water."
The commissioner also urged communities to promptly report any faulty public water facilities to the nearest authorities for immediate repairs, ensuring access to clean water throughout the communities.
He emphasized that there have been no reports of cholera outbreaks in the state, and the government is implementing all necessary measures to prevent any potential outbreaks.
