The Senate expressed concern over the alleged rampant job racketeering in government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and stated that it would explore tougher penalties for offenders to effectively combat the problem.
Senator Allwell Onyesoh, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs, revealed this after a meeting with the Management of Federal Character Commission.
The Committee members were troubled by reports of widespread job racketeering and other irregularities that disregard the principles of federal character in job recruitment, which violate the Nigerian Constitution.
Senator Onyesoh emphasized the potential danger of such activities, warning that Nigerians tend to react emotionally to issues without thorough investigation.
He highlighted the need for transparency and clarity in the activities of the Federal Character Commission to prevent misinformation and potential unrest.
He stressed that the Commission's role is to promote unity, fairness, and equity, and emphasized the importance of ensuring that all individuals feel included.
The Senate is considering imposing stricter penalties to ensure compliance.
