Country legend Randy Travis, who suffered a debilitating stroke in 2013, is making an emotional return to music with the help of cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI).

A new song, "Where That Came From", features Travis' unmistakable voice thanks to sophisticated AI models.

"Eleven years ago I never thought I would be able to have a hand in music production of any kind," Travis told Fox News Digital on Tuesday. 

"But by God’s grace and the support of family, friends, fellow artists and fans, I’m able to create the music I so dearly love… I’ve enjoyed every moment of it."

Travis' life and career took a devastating turn after his stroke left him with aphasia, a condition affecting his ability to speak and sing.

His wife, Mary Travis, explained to "CBS Sunday Morning", "Music is what he's made of. Music is his heart, it's his soul."

While Travis can understand what he wants to communicate, the words often don't come out as intended. He confirmed having accepted his situation with a simple "Yep. Yep."

Mary enthusiastically embraced the idea from Warner Music Nashville's Cris Lacy to use AI to recreate Randy's voice. "Well, we were all over that, so we were so excited," she told the Associated Press. "All I ever wanted since the day of [the] stroke was to hear that voice again."

Developers meticulously created models based on Travis' singing. After singer James Dupree created vocal blueprints, the AI could layer Travis' distinctively rich voice over the tracks. Longtime producer Kyle Lehning emphasized the emotional impact, telling "CBS This Morning", "It's not about how it sounds; it's about how it feels."

"It's Randy Travis. Randy's on the other side of the microphone. It's still his vocal," Lacy stressed. This project showcases the benevolent side of AI, as Mary told the AP, "We’re hoping that maybe we can set a standard… This is such a foreign territory. There's likely more on the horizon."

While "Where That Came From" is the first completed song, all involved express hopes for future releases fueled by this unique technology.

Funds from the project will support the Randy Travis Foundation, dedicated to raising awareness about stroke and aphasia, and promoting music education.
